Procedure for Student Complaints
GateWay Community College is committed to supporting students and helping them when possible, to positively resolve issues, complaints and concerns that might impact their educational goals. The Student Affairs Division Office acts as advocates and assists students in following the Maricopa Community Colleges processes when handling student complaints. We encourage students to exhaust all opportunities to resolve issues and conflicts informally before engaging in the formal complaint process.
We can assist students by making referrals to personal and academic support programs. The Counseling Department may assist and support students during this period.
Prior to filing a formal complaint, students are encouaged to read the policies and processes available to them:
A student who feels that he or she has been treated unfairly or unjustly by any employee with regard to a non-instructional process such as a student or administrative service has the right to file a formal and written complaint according to the approved procedures.
Our promise to you:
All complaints will be dealt with fairly, confidentially and sensitively.
All complaints will be acknowledged within five working days.
You will also receive a response within fifteen working days or a letter explaining if it will take longer.
This process is for a student who feels that he or she has been treated unfairly or unjustly by a faculty member with regard to an academic process such as grading, testing, or assignments; a student has the right to appeal according to the approved procedures. The appeal process for grades expires one year from the date the grade was issued.
Student Disciplinary Code
Specific conduct that is grounds for student discipline, as well as a description of a student's due process rights in discipline matters.
Resolving Student to Student Complaints
Steps for Students to Follow:
-
Attempt to discuss the issue with the student. You may request that a third party be present such as a faculty member, counselor or other college personnel.
-
While there is no specific time limit on resolving student to student complaints, we recommend that if a complaint cannot be resolved within fifteen working days that the student make an appointment to file a complaint form with the Vice President of Student Affairs.
-
The vice president or associate dean will meet with the student and determine next steps in resolving the issue.
-
Students who have harassment including sexual harassment complaints should follow the Maricopa Community Colleges process for filing such complaints.
Harassment
The Maricopa Community College District has long observed a strict policy against sexual harassment of students and employees. This site offers the complete text of that policy, along with useful tools and information to help you recognize and censure conduct that might be sexual harassment.
